The U.S. fertility rate has hit a historic low, and demographers are worried. Millennials are having children later in life, or not at all, and the highest birth rates are now among women 25-34-years-old. Though it’s good news in many respects—teen births have plummeted—the birth rate can’t dip too low or we could face “economic and cultural turmoil.” Some think the birth rate will rise as the economy improves, or that the low numbers are related to better opportunities for women and education among teens. Luckily, it hasn’t dropped below the “replacement level”, yet, so it’s too soon to panic. (The Washington Post)
