Co-living communities, or dorms for Millennial grown-ups, aren’t exactly counter-culture communes. Today’s profit-minded startups shirk egalitarian values and hard work ethos common of 1970s intentional communities, instead choosing to market convenience and amenities. With rents soaring upwards of $2,000, think yoga classes, movie nights, laundry/maid service, and even pre-stocked toilet paper—perhaps the polar opposite of what “hippie-founded” communities of yore had in mind.
