Diversity is becoming a hot topic in children’s literature. According to Scholastic’s The Kids & Family Reading Report, demand for more inclusive stories is rising among American six-17-year-olds and their parents. For 73% of parents diversity means, “people and experiences different than those of my child,” while 68% say it’s “various cultures, customs, or religions.” The report points out the current scarcity of such books, stating: “When there are fewer books and less to choose from, we’re finding children have difficulty locating a favorite or something they really enjoy.” (Kidscreen)
