“Fear of Missing Out,” or a persistent worrying that everyone else is having more fun than you, has been found to be directly correlated to how much time one spends on social media. A paper published in Computers in Human Behavior analyzed three studies to determine roots of FOMO and come to the (unsurprising) conclusion that social media is to blame. “Dissatisfaction with your own life” was also found to be a FOMO motivator—which can lead to spending more time on social media, ultimately creating a “vicious cycle.” Young males were actually found to report the highest levels of FOMO.
