The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1 is arguably the most brutally violent of the series so far, which might make some parents uncomfortable. But it could be that reading about and seeing that violence is actually good for teens. The “ritual of consuming disturbing stories” helps adolescents to define ethical boundaries, and solidify their own values. Watching violence on screen also impacts them differently. While adults often interpret it as “symbolic of deeply scarring real-world events,” younger viewers are more likely to view them as “reflections of the internal stakes” of the heroes and heroines they are rooting for.
