Eliminating recess is a controversial tactic to give students more time with their books, but some schools are testing out-of-the-box methods to keep kids moving. Ward Elementary in North Carolina initiated a “Read and Ride” program five years ago that has kids ride stationary bikes during their reading time. The combination of activity reportedly doesn’t just burn calories, but also improves reading proficiency: students who spent the most time on the bikes achieved 83% proficiency compared to the 41% of those who spent the least time in the program. Read and Ride has expanded to 30 other schools since its launch. (Fast Company)
