The future of movie theaters has been in question since the pandemic. Young audiences are used to a lifetime of the convenience of streaming, and with new releases landing on platforms just weeks—or sometimes days—after hitting theaters, watching them at home is their norm. Why pay for tickets, popcorn, and parking when they could watch from the comfort of their couches? In turn, major studios have come to prioritize streaming premieres over box office runs.   But lately, Gen Z has been driving some of the biggest box office hits and surprises (hello, A Minecraft Movie and KPop Demon Hunters!), prompting headlines asking if this gen could save the movies. And YPulse’s TV and Entertainment data shows young audiences are returning to theaters at nearly pre-pandemic levels—40% of teens and 49% of young adults watch movies on a regular theater screen monthly or more often, compared to 49% and 48% respectively in 2019.
