Electronic Arts is producing TV shows as a way to “broaden” the video game industry—and reach a much larger, diverse audience. While Electronic Arts is known for a variety of video games, from Madden NFL and Apex Legends, they ventured into totally new territory over the summer: Reality TV. They debuted unscripted competition series The Sims: Spark’d, which aired on cable network TBS and was centered on The Sims universe. Nearly all of the contestants in the game were female, and EA hoped to “broaden the video game market” beyond just the “core demographic” of men. The show represents a “new approach” the company is planning to build on within other properties in 2021. (Variety)
