Speaking of applying to jobs…U.K. employers say they’re too broke to hire young people. Unemployment in the U.K. rose to a four-year high in August, with young graduates and non-graduates hit hardest as job vacancies fell. Some blame AI for replacing entry-level work, but economists say it’s simply that “employers are too scared to take a chance on younger people when minimum wages and taxes are much higher.” And while Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ budget increased employer national insurance by +2pts and raised minimum wages, the changes affected part-time roles, making many part-time workers qualified for insurance for the first time. It’s a cruel irony for young workers: policies designed to protect them are instead locking them out entirely as companies choose caution over investment in the next generation. (The Guardian)
