As fewer young people are interested in the nightlife scene, nightclubs are struggling to survive.

Apr 08 2025

As fewer young people are interested in the nightlife scene, nightclubs are struggling to survive. A once-reliable formula of alcohol sales and weekend crowds isn’t cutting it anymore, now that many Gen Z and Millennials are opting to stay in rather than have a night out in their free time. According to YPulse, nearly half of young adults say they never go to nightclubs, and 70% would rather stay home than go out on the weekends to relax or save money. Even clubs in major cities like NYC with cult followings aren’t safe from this budget blow, as the cultural value of nightlife fades in favor of comfort, cost-consciousness, and self-care. (YPulse data shows 65% of young adults believe going out at night is more effort than it’s worth.) For many in the nightclub industry, it’s becoming clear: good vibes alone aren’t enough to keep the lights on. To survive, clubs may need to rethink their business models—focusing on alcohol-free spaces that suit the increasingly sober gen, or more intimate, community-driven experiences that match their mindset.
