Secondhand shopping isn’t anything new, especially for Gen Z. YPulse’s Gen Z’s Resale & Thrift Shift trend report shows 82% of 13-17-year-olds and 78% of 18-24-year-olds have purchased a secondhand item. And for many, it’s not just a one-time thing; 28% of 13-17-year-olds and 40% of 18-24-year-olds make it at least once a month. But where it gets even more Gen Z is that they’re taking thrift shopping online—which of course, also means social media. For them, social media isn’t just for getting secondhand fashion tips or watching thrift hauls, it’s also where they’re buying and selling secondhand items themselves. YPulse data shows 46% of teens and 48% of young adults have bought secondhand through a social media platform and even more (50% of teens and 56% of young adults) have sold used goods there —which are both higher than on resale sites and through brand programs.
