Stores are prioritizing young customers’ in-store shopping preferences by expanding self-checkout options. According to a recent survey conducted by Inc., 52% of Gen Z shoppers would switch to another store if their favorite store eliminated self-checkout options—while older gens seem to hate it altogether. The survey identified three main reasons for their preference: speed, shorter lines, and a desire for “less interaction with people.” This signifies a major shift from previous gens, as older customers have traditionally expressed a dislike for self-checkout and a preference for human interaction in retail, but Gen Z’s preferences are now taking priority for many brands. YPulse’s Shopping and Retail report shows Gen Z are even more likely than Millennials to prefer shopping IRL to online, but the majority still agree “When I shop, I want to get in and get out as quickly as possible,” which aligns with their self-checkout preference.
