The filter applies pumped eyelashes, dark lipliner, and pencil thin eyebrows to a user’s face. #Y2KMakeupFilter counts nearly 3M views on the app, garnering positive reactions from young women: “Unpopular opinion but can thin eyebrows come back,” reads one video while another reads, “is it the filter or are thin eyebrows a vibe?” Some older Millennials aren’t as impressed with the filter as their Gen Z counterparts are, because, well, they’ve already lived through the thin eyebrow phase of the early 2000s. One woman explains in a TikTok video using the filter: “The only thing this app does is remind me of what it was like to be a teenager.” *puts filter on* “And now I’m back in my highschool cafeteria.” YPulse’s New Content Creators trend research found 46% of 13-39-year-olds have edited their physical appearance in a photo or video before posting it to social media. And while social media filters are often seen as having a negative impact on young people’s self-esteem (our research shows that it does), filters also give young people a way to play around with beauty looks that remind them of popular styles from previous generations.
Teen Wolf’s Arden Cho Declined to Star in The Upcoming Revival Movie After Being Offered Less Pay Than Her White Co-Stars—And Fans Aren’t Happy
Last fall, it was confirmed that the 2011 MTV series Teen Wolf would be getting a revival film on Paramount+ and it’s expected to premiere later this year. Last month, the streaming service unveiled the cast, and while many of the original cast members said they’re returning, there were some notable faces missing, including Dylan O’Brien, Tyler Hoechlin, and Arden Cho, who portrayed thunder kitsune Kira Yukimura. Many fans were disappointed to see that Cho wasn’t returning, and the actress revealed that she declined the role due to only being offered “half the per-episode salary proposed to her three counterparts.” Cho is the only actress of color among the four female series regular cast members. O’Brien also confirmed Cho’s claims after he reportedly liked tweets where she spoke out about the news. Fans quickly took to social media to call out the directors and pointed out the pay disparities in the entertainment industry when it comes to gender and race. One tweet that has since been deleted read:
“Absolutely sick to the stomach about how teen wolf treated Arden Cho when the show was still airing. Thank God she left. And now they’re doing a movie and they’re only offering, the only asian woman, HALF the salary compared to other, white, female casts? Go to hell.”
The news is bringing up conversations over how Cho’s character was one of the most compelling among the pack, though the directors often gave her “limited screen time” and she was “left out of the show in the last season.” YPulse’s Representation in Action trend research found that nearly half of 13-39-year-old Asian consumers feel underrepresented or discriminated against because of their race / ethnicity, while a quarter say they feel underrepresented or discriminated against because of their gender. Additionally, 76% of Asian young consumers say they wish they saw more people of their race in TV shows / movies. Arden Cho’s decision to decline the Teen Wolf revival movie signals that the entertainment industry still has a ways to go when it comes to uplifting representation both on- and behind-screens.
The Fairy Grunge Aesthetic Is Taking Center Stage on TikTok
We’ve told you about the long list of internet aesthetics young people are fueling, from cottagecore, to dreamcore, and even pearlcore (there’s too many “cores” to count), and now, the fairy grunge look (think flowy dresses with a hint of gothic style, black platform boots, and goblincore sweatshirts) is making its way as the new main character of internet aesthetics on TikTok. At the end of 2021, Pinterest found that “fairy grunge” was one of the most-searched trends among Gen Z. Though some of the defining pieces of fairy grunge are flowy peasant skirts, lace, ripped tights, knitted sweaters, and corsets, content creator Cloe See tells Teen Vogue, “I do believe that a level of escapism is associated with the style, but the level depends on the individual wearer.” The aesthetic takes inspiration from the Japanese aesthetic “Mori Girl” (Mori = forest), and it also pulls inspiration from ‘90s music and entertainment like Nirvana, 10 Things I hate About You, and more notably, Twilight. On TikTok, #FairyGrunge counts more than 350M views, providing home decor inspo, outfit tutorials, and more tips for achieving the look. Though the fairy grunge aesthetic is a whimsical take on ‘90s grunge, it’s also an open arms embrace of gender neutral fashion as anyone—men, women, and nonbinary people—can be as playful or minimalistic as they want with the trend. This aesthetic shows how Gen Z continues changing the status quo when it comes to fashion, putting themself at the center of their favorite fairytale-esque fantasies while abandoning traditional gender roles in fashion.
A 26-Year-Old Designer’s Collection for London Fashion Week is Racking Up Views on TikTok
On the first day of London fashion week, Atelier Dirk Vaessen (a 26-year-old London College of Fashion MA graduate) unveiled a collection featuring “futuristic” wooden shoes—and some nude, pancake-esque apparel to compliment the models’ runway looks. The wooden shoes quickly caught the internet’s eyes (we’re betting it’s because the shoe design makes for a good meme / laugh), and they’re racking up views on TikTok: #DirkVaessen has generated more than 22M views since London Fashion Week (LFW), featuring clips showing the models perform their runway walk, to their best ability, in the dramatic shoes. Comparing it to last year’s LFW, Dirk Vaessen’s wooden shoes have generated 7M+ more views than the tag #RichardQuinn—one of the most viral brands at last year’s LFW. Not only are people sharing their reactions to the dramatic wooden shoes, young TikTokers are (naturally) making memes about the models’ runway walks in the nearly unwalkable kicks: @rubynoosa shared a clip from the fashion show with overlaid text reading, “Me after the first day at the gym.” The most-viewed video is from i-D magazine and the comment section is filled with more comedic thoughts from young people like, “when your mom says ‘come out and help me unload the groceries’ and you wear the nearest thing available,” and “Home Depot core”—you know, cause they’re made of strictly wood. The 26-year-old designer knows his wooden shoe collection is out there: “The shoes are not there for being shoes, but more like a tool that changes your posture. It was based on the concept of form follows function.” Still, he never knew his collection would spark such strong reactions: “I thought: ‘Ok. My work is a bit weird or whatever’…but I didn’t expect it to be this massive.”
