Where Millennials are REALLY Living Now (Hint: Most Aren’t In the Basement)

Still think Millennials are living at home with their parents? Most have flown the nest, and we’re outlining exactly where and how they’re living now in our infographic snapshot…

Somehow, the narrative that Millennials are living in their parents’ basements continues to live on—even though the generation has, for the most part, grown up. The idea that these young consumers are still “boomeranged” back to their childhood homes might be causing some brands to overlook them as an opportunity, as we outlined with our home décor data. But we don’t just know how Millennials want to shop for their spaces, we know exactly how and where they’re living now.

In our most recent survey of 13-35-year-olds, we asked young consumers exactly what their living situation is, and found that Millennials are most likely to be living not with their parents, but with a significant other. Three in ten are living with a partner, and one in five are living with roommates. Which means that those living at home with their parents are very much the minority—about a third are living at home, and a significant number of them are still in school. Here’s more data and insight about where exactly Millennials live now, in our special “out of the nest” infographic snapshot:
