It’s difficult to influence new behaviors in an already existing app, and sometimes too expensive to acquire one that is already on the rise. Facebook learned the hard way with its failure to buy Snapchat, but just because look-a-like Slingshot hasn’t gained momentum, doesn’t mean the social network should stop trying. We told you about all of the standalone apps big networks are coming out with now, but sometimes they are “supposed to fail”—built cheap, fast, and low-risk. Maybe the app is a flop, like Twitter #Music, or maybe it’s a hit, but either way, new apps test user preferences that only can be explored once uncovered. (TechCrunch)
