Meta announced that it will automatically limit the type of content that teen Instagram and Facebook accounts can see. Content such as posts about self-harm, graphic violence, and eating disorders will be automatically restricted for these accounts, even if it’s coming from a user they follow. The company has faced increased scrutiny over claims that its services are harmful to young users—including dozens of lawsuits across states and countries—all of which called for more regulation of this nature. Meta claims it consults with experts in the field to ensure age-appropriate and safer experiences for young users, prioritizing user safety and providing appropriate support resources. YPulse’s Social Media Behavior data shows more than two in five teens agree “Social media makes me feel worse about myself / my life,” so the issue of harmful content is certainly a prevalent one.
