It sounds like an impossible task, but it can be done, even if it’s one baby step at a time. One of my first steps was downsizing the garbage can and getting a bigger recycling bin. Within weeks I noticed others on my street doing the same thing. Young people may feel a little powerless at times to make even the slightest change in their own neighborhood, but as the saying goes there is strength in numbers. And as the sites below show, a little networking could go a long way.

CausecastCausecast – An impressive multi-platform approach, Causecast converges media, social networking, entertainment and education to empower those seeking to do good. The site strives to connect organizations with individuals so that they can work together to further their common causes.

Global Young Greens – For people 35 and under who identify as Green, this site gives you the tools and resources to further your Green agenda and keep you connected with likeminded members. Members are also encouraged to publish their own written work, or “Free Expressions,” to share on the site.

The League of Young Voters – They register voters, lobby at all levels, train organizers, mobilize young people, and more. The League focuses on underserved, low-income communities and young people 18 to 24 who are not in college. They are currently working on a leadership training program and are planning a major national initiative.

Students for Sensible Drug Policy – Neither encouraging nor condemning drug use, this international organization helps young people become involved in the political process of revising the drug policies. The SSDP believes the current policies do not address the real harms of drug abuse and some actually do more harm than help. There are student chapters in schools across the nation and every year they organize regional conferences to discuss their variety of campaigns.

YouthNet – A U.K.-based site, YouthNet helps youths realize their full potential. Through their two websites, TheSite.org and Do-it.org.uk, information, advice, and support is available online or on-the-go. Do-it gives youths endless volunteer opportunities to choose from. TheSite answers any and all life questions a young person may ask, backed with facts and research.

Alonovo – The “intelligent marketplace” is like a guilt-free online shopping experience. With every product, you get a company’s report card which will tell you everything from their social responsibility to their impact on the environment. Once registered, you can even set your own values to find products that matches a company’s values.

do the right thing – At “do the right thing,” stories and information about a company are submitted by the community and then ranked according to its social and environmental impact. Visitors receive insight and information into a company’s values while company representatives can clearly determine how consumers truly perceive the company.

Youth Service America – For over 20 years, YSA has been empowering young people 5 to 25 to step up to important roles in their communities, schools, and government. They firmly believe that the earlier youth are asked to serve, the better prepared they are to become leaders and lifelong philanthropists.

Greenvoice – At Greenvoice, members can join in any local or global environmental campaign or group they are most concerned with. From Whale of a Time to Excess Packaging, the site encourages members to start their own campaign or group to get their green voice heard.
