Ypulse Monthly Teen Mag Roundup

sept09coverIt's hard to believe that Teen Vogue cover girl Taylor Momsen is only 16 years old. Maybe it has something do with the fact that she's been acting for 10 years, graduated from high school early  and, oh yeah, is verging on her third season of starring on steamy CW soap "Gossip Girl." And then there's also the glam rocker look she works on and off-set (fitting for the lead singer of a band regularly compared to Courtney Love's Hole). So yeah, it's not surprising to hear she feels a tad mature for her age: "I just can't relate to what [high school kids] talk about—it seems so petty." And bad news for teen guys, Taylor says: "I would eat a boy my age alive." Ouch.

Always the silver lining to the back-to-school blues, fall fashion gets its due in Teen Vogue with a count down of the top breakout trends to look for this upcoming season including military jackets and "rebel gems." For those with a soft spot for vintage touches (*raises hand), there's candy tweeds, sweet bows, and sparkly pins. Oh my. Added bonus? Along with the lovely, but pricier designer picks, a few of these must-haves can be found at the likes of Target.

There's also an in-depth look at the rise of shoplifting among teens. Rates have spiked since the economy plunged and glamorized plot lines on teen TV shows haven't helped. Neither has a general nonchalant attitude or the misconception that stealing from "faceless corporations" like Urban Outfitters and lower end accessory stores is a victim-less crime.

seventeenseptcoverYet another acting veteran, Seventeen cover girl Selena Gomez comes off as more of the girl-next-door type gushing about her love for teen mags (her fave is obviously Seventeen), her issues with "haters" on the net and her latest celebrity crush Shia LeBeouf, who also got his start on the Disney Channel. "The Wizards of Waverly Place" star talks about looking up to him for making the transition to non-Disney fare, but still maintaining his relationship with the channel she considers "family." Sounds like smart footsteps to follow. No need for "Twilight "star Taylor Lautner to get jealous though. She calls meeting and hanging out with him in Vancouver, "the best thing ever."

Taking the more practical approach to back-to-school shopping, Seventeen demonstrates how teens can get the most style bang for their buck. The cover promises the best clothes to fit personal style and budget restrictions, along with huge discounts and clothes under $20. Inside, a money pro offers some tips for dealing with the economy.

An article on self-harm takes a closer look at what motivates the destructive habit in young people and also offers resources for where to find help. While cutting, unfortunately, is not a recent development among depressed teens, with a recent study showing 23 percent of teens engaging in self-injury and new manifestations like self-embedding, it's an issue that can only benefit from the increased awareness.

Also, for "collectors" out there, the September issue of Seventeen is a special edition with two bonus covers all featuring the adorable Ms. Gomez showing off different styles.
