Ypulse Interview: Scott Foe, Nokia

Posted by meredith on 05-07-2009

Today's Ypulse interview is with Scott Foe from Nokia. As senior producer, Scott is responsible for pushing the limits of connected mobile gaming. Last spring he unveiled his dream project, the brand's flagship mobile title,"Reset Generation," an action/puzzle game that combines different video games together. To hear more from Scott catch him on the "Mobile Youth Marketing That Works" panel at the Ypulse Youth Marketing Mashup event next month. If you haven't yet, register now!

resetgYpulse: What are some of the recurring trends you've seen in the mobile gaming space in terms of the youth market?

Scott Foe: The youth market is going mobile: That’s the trend. The mobile device is personal, a statement of individual freedom as impactful as the automobile was to generations previous. These mobile devices are also personal computers, and they are the most personal computers that we will ever own.

YP: How does your latest game "Resent Generation" reflect these trends?

SF: Reset Generation was created from the ground up to be a mobile experience. You can take a great mobile experience and then translate that to the wired-space, but the reverse isn’t always true: Most great PC or console experiences degrade when they go to mobile.

YP: Seeing as you've had experience developing both, what's the biggest difference between console gaming and mobile gaming in terms of the gamer's experience? Are the expectations different? If so, how?

SF: In the console world, the saying goes that a game must be, "Easy to learn, impossible to master!" That’s the mantra. In the mobile space, we’re looking at a complete capsizing of what we know: The games must be, "Easy to learn, easy to master." Developing a mobile entertainment experience is much like developing a toilet: The experience must be so easy to use, and so satisfying when you use it.

YP: Over the next few years what do you expect to see happen in mobile gaming? What do you hope to see happen?

SF: We are fast approaching an era of no-compromise convergence: The world's not going to be about the platforms for which entertainment was created; the world's going to be about enjoying entertainment from different platforms. We've already seen and done that with Reset Generation: It's the same great game whether you're playing from mobile handset or from PC, and the mobile handset and the PC can play together, seamlessly.
