Ypulse Guest Post: Tracking Trends @ The Agenda Tradeshow
Posted by meredith on 07-24-2009Today’s Ypulse Guest Post is from Lindsay Holland, Campaign Manager for Premise Immersive Marketing [a Ypulse sponsor]. We asked Lindsay to report back from the Agenda Tradeshow in Huntington Beach.
Tracking Trends @ The Agenda Tradeshow
The Agenda Tradeshow was an explosion of style, art, music and culture as the hottest brands in streetwear and action sports converged on Huntington Beach. All the players, big and small, shared the floor to showcase their newest lines of apparel, shoes, sunglasses, bags and more. Here is my take on the good, the bad and the emerging trends.
You’ll be glad you held onto your flannels from the 90′s. The grunge-style is still getting a thumbs up from the action sports industry, at least for one more season – Hurley even developed a line of boardshorts to resemble the plaid basic to take you right through the summer.
.
Quirky graphics and large prints are still a hit for next season. Although, the trend seems to be stretching the brand logo or icon to cover as much t-shirt real estate as possible, effectively making the wearer a “human billboard.” I have mixed feelings about this trend, as I feel like I’m more willing to openly wear a brand name on a shoe or bag than I am to advertise it across my chest. But maybe that’s because I have a loud mouth so I don’t need a loud shirt ;)
Gear with style, function and entertainment. As somebody who can’t snowboard, I don’t have much use for a product like the sound disk beanie from Aerial7. The fashionable hat has built in headphones, so small you can’t even tell you’re wearing them. This device works with all music players and even your iPhone. You can be jamming to a tune one minute and talking to your Mom the next, without ever using your hands, which is helpful for me since I need them to break my falls. Now, I might think twice about strapping a board to my feet and falling down a mountain – as long as I can listen to my favorite band while doing it.
Green grows roots. My favorite theme of the show was that nearly all of the brands I had a chance to speak with were already using eco-friendly practices or making a push to implement them before next season. What exactly does it mean to be eco-friendly? Well, according to Brad Swearngin from Few, whose line of surf inspired apparel includes organic cottons and bamboo fabrics, it’s about creating a product that is renewable, sustainable and leaves a minimal footprint. All that, and it’s super comfy too!
If you ever get a chance to visit Agenda, take it. Your fashion sense will thank you.
