Ypulse Essentials: Tween Mags, Justin Timberlake & Stopping Homework

Posted by anastasia on 05-29-2007

BopIs Disney fueling the growth of tween mags? (if they've revived jump roping, it makes sense that their stable of tween stars would be a big draw to titles like J-14 and Bop. Plus tweens still love the pin-ups [I used to buy them for Ralph Macchio!]) (New York Times, reg. required)

- More on tweens and bad girl celebutantes (another article on the anti-role models, Paris, Britney, Lindsay, and the celebrity gossip machine's effect on tween girls) (New York Times, reg. required)

- Mashup keynote Henry Jenkins (on why YouTube is awesome. This post is so good and kind of makes me sad because a lot of us thought Current TV would play this role)

- The Sims (to hit the big screen) (Reuters)

- Justin Timberlake (music mogul, in addition to his restaurant and clothing line, the former boy bander just launched a record label called Tennman Records) (PR Newswire)

- Josh Spear's take on reaching wired youth (presented at Google Zeitgeist)

- Apple blocking MySpace in its stores (is similar to malls requiring curfews. The goal is to keep teens from hanging out and monopolizing their computers)

- Gasp! User generated ads not as good as real ads? (I agree that running a user generated ad campaign takes lots of work [and know this from working at Current], but I also agree with Lost Remote that the emphasis on quality misses the point)

- Stop Homework (while you might think this would be a cause created by disgruntled students, it's actually a book and thought out movement created by a parent/journalist - thanks Karell!) (Boing Boing)

P.S. Definitely check out this article in today's Washington Post, reg. required, about the high school track star who was made an internet celebrity when a sports blogger posted her photo online. I have lots to say on this plan to post on Totally Wired this afternoon. Also, read quotes from yours truly about teens and tech in this article in today's Contra Costa Times.
