Ypulse Essentials: The MySpace Effect, A Debate Over Newbery, Textbook Rentals

Posted by meredith on 12-17-2008

disneychannelHow do you say Hannah Montana in Russian? (The Disney Channel is set to launch in Russia featuring shows like "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" and "Hannah Montana") (New York Times, reg. required)

- The MySpace effect (on music. Has the social media site changed our listening habits? And New York Governor proposes a statewide tax on music downloaded online) (on-point) (MarketingVox)

- Nick scores big digitally (among all kid and family online destinations Nickelodeon's sites reign supreme)

- What do Nick Lachey, Donald Trump and Diddy have in common? (MTV. In the search for more original programming the network has greenlit nine new shows including projects that involve all of the above, respectively. Plus MTV lists the teen queens that ruled over 2008) (TVWeek) (MTV News)

- Reporting cyberbullies (just got easier on social sites like YouTube) (WSJ.com)

- Does the Newbery Award help or hurt its cause? (The Washington Post delves into the debate raised over the accessibility of recent winning titles) (Kid Lit)

- Textbook rentals (gaining momentum with startup Chegg attracting a cool quarter million in funding. Seems like prime timing for this cost-effective idea) (TechCrunch)

- No J-school, no problem? (The Oakland Press offers free training for anyone interested in news writing, videography, photography and reporting. Once finished these newly churned out citizen journalists will have the chance to get published. Wonder how that pays.. And speaking of job hunting, Mashable lists some good online resources for recent grads and young professionals) (PSFK)

- How young is too young for electronic gifts? (Look out for Anastasia's quotes!) (Philadelphia Inquirer)

- School lunches on the rise (in these hard times. Also do millennials need a frugal role model to learn to pinch pennies?) (SLJ) (Detroit Free Press)

Correction to yesterday's guest post: the European conference we referred to as Trendwatching was actually called Youthwatching.

P.S. Piers Fawkes from PSFK had a pretty strong response to YAB Member Liz Funk's post on how young, aspiring media professionals can get through the rough times ahead and we wanted to invite Ypulse readers to weigh in on the discussion.

Love the Philly Inquirer story… one thing I would've like to see is that parents are using these gadgets to pacify their children rather than dealing with them? For instance how some children have been conditioned to having DVD Players in cars. Hmm… why are we worrying about texting while driving when we are raising a generation that won't be able to drive without watching a DVD… jk! :o)
