Ypulse Essentials: Teen Flicks @ Sundance, Tough Times For Gen Y Job Seeker, Generation G
Posted by anastasia on 01-21-2009
'Push' premieres to positive buzz (Mariah Carey is behind the movie adaptation of Sapphire's amazing novel Push. Also check out these two Sundance films about teens "Stay the Same Never Change" and "Dare" (featuring "Friday Night Lights" hottie Zach Gilford) – as an aside, I produced a fundraiser for Teen Voices years ago where Sapphire was our special guest. Read this book if you haven't already. And speaking of Teen Voices, they posted a great interview with yesterday's Inaugural poet Elizabeth Alexander.) (MTV News) (Salt Lake Tribune)
- Partying like it's 1993 (fun critique of how MTV's Inaugural Ball reminded this blogger of the Clinton years. And another cool post about how Pepsi seemed to leave out music beyond the 1990s in the latest ad that's a part of its campaign targeting Millennials) (Idolator) (Songs For A Soap)
- Tough times (for Gen Y job seekers) (MSNBC)
- Now it's Generation G (for 'Generosity' – see examples with Starbuck's Service Pledge and how kids' virtual world Elf Island is helping real world Habitat For Humanity) (TrendWatching) (USA Today)
- 'Consumer Kids' (new book by Ed Mayo and Agnes Nairn about kids being targeted by advertisers online. If you work for a company in the online kids' space, please connect with the folks organizing the Kids Online group. They are all about being ethical, safe and profitable.) (Times Online)
- Girls are the new geeks (according to Science Daily, girls are better at a lot of tech than boys…oh and they can totally rock out, too. Though be warned: Headbanging can be bad for your health) (Science Daily) (Iconoculture)
- Mixed Martial Arts (has gone from controversial to attracting mainstream sponsors) (New York Times, reg. required)
- Hello Kitty (now has an iPhone app. Check out new "interest based" social network BUUUZ with the URL nobody will ever remember how to spell.)
- Harris Interactive (our Ypulse Research sponsor, is launching a UK youth division)
P.S. We're looking for crowdsourced business strategy advice for Ypulse related to whether we should try a premium content offering, and if so, what it would look like. Join our LinkedIn group (over 630 youth media and marketing pros strong) and let us know what you think!

Your recommendation of "Stay the Same Never Change" made me smile so hard…my boyfriend actually did the soundtrack. I second the reco (for non-personal reasons, I swear): where most stories about teens written by adults are either too saccharine or too sensationalized, STSNC, in its weird, dreamy (nightmare-y?) way, captures some amazingly raw and right-on teen emotions.

Hey Holly – that's so cool. I can't wait to see it. Do you think it could be a film to screen at the June Mashup? I was thinking it would be fun to have another movie followed by a q&a like we did with American Teen last year….
