Ypulse Essentials: Remaking 'Rocky Horror,' Hannah Montana Wake-Up Calls, MTV's First Political Ad

Posted by casey on 07-25-2008

rockyhorror.jpgMTV makes over 'Rocky Horror' (no casting rumors just yet, so Defamer gave their two cents including Miley Cyrus, Zac Efron and Pete Wentz in the mix. Also if your inner nerd wishes he or she were at Comic Con, G4's Attack of The Show has wall-to-wall coverage) (Defamer via Variety)

- Hannah Montana wake up calls (part of Wal-Mart's back-to-school push…Plus, The Clique Girlz, an up-and-coming tween trio, is the female answer to the Jonas Brothers. And more casual games planned over at Nickelodeon) (Reuters) (OC Register) (Casual Gaming Biz)

- MTV wants girls to 'Ask Elizabeth' (we covered Elizabeth Berkley-Lauren's self esteem site and workshops for girls last spring…looks like it's becoming an unscripted show on MTV. And not-so-well-known UK comic Russell Brand to host the VMAs) (Huffington Post)

- MTV running "527" political ads (in addition to ads from candidates, which they originally said they would run exclusively, the channel will run "527" third-party ads approved on a case-by-case basis) (Jossip)

- It is easy being green (kids are leaders as far as buying eco-friendly products go, and more than half 6- to-8-year-olds encourage their parents to go green) (Mediapost, reg. required)

- High school at home (with e-courses on the rise, a behind-the-scenes look with online teachers)

- OfficeMax uses viral ads for BTS (creates a series of webisodes to hype their "penny products." Uh, will teens really seek out OfficeMax videos on YouTube?) (AdAge, reg. required)

- Piczo opens up (popular teen site launches API allowing users to post items from other services) (TechCrunch)

- Math's gender gap (is now non-existent between boys and girls elementary school through high school, but in math-heavy fields like engineering, physics, and computer science, women still only make up about 20% of undergrad programs!) (ArsTechnica)

- Tattooed teens (with the popularity of "L.A. Ink," teenagers still struggle to convince parents that they should be allowed to get tattoos - "but Mom, it's art") (Ashbury Park Press)

- Girl Scouts sweet slip-up? (CSPI reprimandes Girl Scouts for lending their name to DQ's Thin Mint blizzard, a 1,000 treat that "promotes obesity") (Mediapost, reg. required)

- Huru humi (meet the new Webkinz-inspired virtual world for tweens, featuring characters that look just like bobble-heads or USB character sticks!)

  1. Eric Jaffa Says:

The group which produced the ad against Obama, "Let Freedom Ring," is a soft-money group, a 501(c)4.

Ideally, TV networks would only run ads which mention candidates if they were paid for with hard money.

  2. Sonya Says:

I'm happy to hear about kids urging their parents to go green. The younger generation will in turn pass it along to their kids, not to mention how they'll hopefully make it hip in the meantime.
