RE "Is Gen Y so vain?"

Such traits, (Jean) Twenge says, include a very positive and inflated sense of self, which is illustrated by a preoccupation with MySpace, Facebook and YouTube.
=========================

I was a kid in the 1970s. We watched "The Love Boat" on television. It was the best thing on at the time. There was no "MySpace, Facebook and YouTube."

Would she prefer that today's young people were watching re-runs of "The Love Boat" instead of communicating with each other through "MySpace, Facebook and YouTube"?

I'm glad today's young people have options I didn't have in the 1970s.

If they are more vain, then fine.

Instead of using the negative-sounding term "vain," one could use the positive-sounding term "self-esteem" for the same trait.
