Nick says “unplug” on Earth Day (but only for one minute at 9 p.m. and television sets aren’t included. Err.. I guess it’s the thought that counts? Also Leonardo DiCaprio is honored at the Kids’ Choice Awards with the first Big Green Help Award. Plus, to promote the release of a new “eco-documentary,” Disney offers to plant a tree for movie every ticket sold during its first week in theaters) (Variety) (Promo)
- CIA gets a Face[book] lift (the government spy agency embraces social media among other methods to recruit younger candidates. But while this may account for some of young people’s increased interest in public service jobs, as this Washington Post piece points out, the real credit goes to Obama for making a federal gig seem “cool again”) (Ad Age, reg. required)
- Higher levels of stress over getting in to college (are linked to the economic downturn, according to the findings of a recent survey released by Princeton Review. Plus, Chase Bank partners with College Parents of America to release Parents, Teens and Money a guidebook that will help parents discuss personal finance issues with their teens) (Boston Globe
- 2009 state Technology Reports (assess each state’s education technology. Plus, Dweeber a new social networking site for student homework collaboration) (Education Week)
- Teenage hacker puts his skills to good use (after being hired to fight against cyber-crime by a New Zealand telecommunications company. Inspired, no? In not so inspired news, iTunes introduces tiered pricing based on songs’ popularity. Does anyone think this is going to go over well?) (AFP) (Los Angeles Times
- ACLU steps in over ‘sexting’ case in PA (suing the prosecutor who is attempting to charge three teen girls as sex offenders. Plus Utah vetoes an underage game bill) (Wired) (ars technica)
- Are gender stereotypes affecting girls’ political aspirations? (a recent stint as guest lecturer for a Women’s Studies class has Madeleine Kuhn, the first female governor of Vermont, worried. And Jezebel chimes in voicing support for the “Tracy Flicks” of the world) (The Huffington Post)
- Cartoon Network introduces live action (along with the NBA deal we mentioned earlier, the channel has plans for a new block of reality programming, branded as “CN Real.” Plus, American Idol winner David Archuleta makes his virtual world debut on Habbo) (Ad Age, reg. required)
-Does Google Voice speak to young consumers? (Next Great Thing questions the appeal for a younger, largely landline-less crowd. Meanwhile, college students are all about the service offered by Zipcar ) (NGT) (GenDigital)
- ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ trailer is out!! (and the anticipation gets that much more intense. Also, Obama signs a book deal to write a middle-grade version of “Dreams of My Father”) (AdFreak) (UPI via SLJ)

RE “ACLU steps in over ‘sexting’ case in PA.”
In statutory rape cases, the underaged girl isn’t charged.
It is topsy-turvy for the prosecutor in Pennsyvlania to be threatening criminal charges against underaged girls for appearing in photos.
