Ypulse Essentials: My Handwork Studio, Texting In Church, Gen Y Moms
Posted by anastasia on 10-06-2008
Hard times for LC (blame it on the economy – "Hills" star Lauren Conrad's fashion line is "dying on the shelves," according to the New York Post. Plus college students get thrifty with dorm decor) (New York Times, reg. required)
- My Handwork Studio (a kids' needle arts & fashion community – cool!)
- Teens no longer bringing dates to dances (I brought two dates to my senior prom!) (Chicago Tribune)
- Economist and Atlantic (try new "experimental" ad campaigns to reach new [younger] readers) (New York Times, reg. required)
- Young stars falling short (at the box office this summer – Flicks like "America Girl" and "America Teen" did not pull big numbers. Plus this week's Younger Viewers TV ratings round-up from Media Life Magazine) (Variety)
- Reuters on girl gamers (and ad rep firm Gorilla Nation will rep Horseland, a virtual world and TV show for tween girls. Plus Aussie boys prefer video games to sleep. And 360 Kid on the new Nintendo DSi.) (Reuters) (Herald Sun)
- Texting in church (a young pastor incorporates SMS into his sermons and WuduPlz is a new service hoping to get parents texting with their kids)
- Obama/Biden have a new iPhone app (of course they do. And a youth mobile marketing preso from Japan) (Textually)
- Campuses cool (to the vicious Juicy Campus site. Plus new cyberbullying study reconfirms why teens don't tell.) (ABC News) (News.com)
- Outkast's Big Boi to promote Coke's new energy drink (the comment on this post kinda scared me: "I drank some full throttle to stay up studying the other night and that stuff is liquid crystal meth! I was talking fast, writing my notes fast, even the thoughts in my head were racing." Sorry Big Boi and Coke, energy drinks + youth = not good.)
- Here come the Gen Y moms! (four tips to prepare) (The Social Path)
- Chevy's taxi cab confessions (new competition involves college students, cabs and video – you win by getting the most views. Pity the cab drivers. Plus Kodak tries a superhero site to reach youth online) (Media Post, reg. required)
P.S. For more links all day long, subscribe to the Ypulse Twitter feed staffed by our Youth Advisory Board. And to correspond with our board directly, i.e. give them feedback, offer to send them books, CDs and other stuff to review or write about, just email them at ypulseadvisoryboard at ypulse.com.

I don't think people should be shocked by Lauren Conrad's line being left on the shelves…
Compared with L.A.M.B. or other popular brands that are still selling, LC just doesn't have the same identity to offer (no offence to LC, Heidi, Spidey or anyone else from the "Almost Real O.C.").
Marketers and brand directors need to be careful not to fall for the "Three Amigos!" mistake in brand development. Infamous is not the same as famous and won't necessarily translate into sales.

The TXTing in church thing has been around at some churches for a while now, Mars Hill Church, Seattle has been doing it for almost a year. At the start of the year, they did a serries which was an internet poll on common questions that people asked then voted for what they wanted.

Re: the Obama iPhone app
The Obama campaign may also be trying to reach young voters through Michelle Obama going on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" on Wednesday, October 8, 2008.
