Ypulse Essentials: MTV Ratings Fall, Girl Gaming, What The Flip?
Posted by meredith on 12-23-2008
MTV's ratings continue to fall (dropping 23% among 12 to 34 year olds. Is this a wider trend among young viewers? Also Entertainment Weekly is less than impressed by "The Hills" season finale) (Reality Blurred) (Entertainment Weekly)
- More on teens and the Christmas crunch (this season the tree isn't the only thing getting trimmed – young shoppers cut back on their holiday budgets. ABC's Nightline also covers the timely topic) (Associated Press)
- Ypulse vs. PSFK (the debate over young professionals gets picked up in the blogosphere. And has gone international to boot) (With My BA) (Alfred Malmros)
- Enrollment threatens to drop (at private colleges with fewer applicants than previous years. And a college sophomore over at The Daily Beast suggests -given a drop-out rate of nearly 50% – why this may not be such a bad thing from a financial perspective) (New York Times, reg. required) (The Daily Beast)
- Girl gaming (gets some play with Trend Central highlighting the latest crop of tween-targeted games) (Trend Central)
- Parents Television Council goes after YouTube comments (that contain obscenities and sexually suggestive content. And Jezebel discusses the case of a 21 year-old girl in Missouri who was one of the first to get charged under a post-Megan Meier cyberbullying law) (ars technica) (Jezebel)
- What the Flip? (In what should be an interesting social experiment MTV joins up with Flip Video, distributing cameras to 100 college students across the country in an effort to see what they see)
- Nick lets U-Pick (the channel launches a new online community and social news site that gives kids the power to decide what's newsworthy. Also Next Great Thing talks about the channel's upcoming political coverage) (Next Great Thing)
- Buzzwords from 2008 (The New York Times revisits some of the hop topics and catchphrases from this past year) (New York Times, reg. required)
- What's the greatest obstacle you've overcome? (Lisa McMann, author of Wake and Simon & Schuster, ask teens between the ages of 14 and 18 to answer this question for an essay contest with a $1000 prize that starts today)

YouTube's new policy isn't only "'algorithmically demoting' sexually suggestive" videos.
It's also to demote videos for containing an expletive.
There is nothing wrong with using an expletive in a video.
YouTube's new policy is wrong.
