cliquespan A sweet save for the Clique Girlz (the floundering tweeny bopper band will become spokeswomen for Topps’ Baby Bottle Pop. Well, it worked for former Topps’ spokesband the JoBros. And Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus asks Michelle Obama to see the silver lining of the controversial “Sasha and Malia” dolls. Plus more Twilight dolls) (New York Times, reg. required) (The Washington Post) (MTV News)

- The president’s personality (a sociological explanation for young supporters’ warm response to Obama. And more reflections on the inauguration from a blogger who says the highlight was listening to the audiobook of “Dreams of My Father” on the way home and thinking about the president’s media literacy) (The Seattle Times) (PopPolitics)

  1. Eric Jaffa Says:

The judges on the Wisconsin Supreme Court are too literal.

Of course, cheerleading involves “contact.” That doesn’t mean that the legislators had cheerleading in mind when they exempted “contact sports” from lawsuits.

Ask someone to name a “contact sport” and he will probably say football.

This ruling barring lawsuits will cause lower safety-standards for cheerleading than if the lawsuit had been allowed to proceed.

More girls will get injured because of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

  2. Eric Jaffa Says:

No school activity should be exempt from lawsuits.

If a football coach or a cheerleading coach behaves unreasonably and causes an injury, then the injured person should be compensated.

Wisconsin should change its law and remove the exemption for “contact sports.”

NY Times missed one huge fact… that Ariel Moore left the Clique Girlz. I had the exclusive on that Saturday and followed up on Monday with the Official Press Release that they would be casting for a new member this weekend.

Unpopular names… hmm… I think that research falls one step to analyze those names and the parents that gave them those names. Take for instance the recent news story of the boy named Adolph Hitler that was removed from his parents. Do you think the ‘name’ will have more to do with if he is going to be a criminal… or his parents?

  5. Sharon McEachern Says:

I agree that the law should be changed to remove exemption of “contact sports.” But aside from the legal terminology and what that means — cheerleading IS of contact sport.

Check this out — for girls in both high school and college, two-thirds of all severe sports injuries (from 1982 to 2007) were related to cheerleading, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research. You can read the center’s guidelines to help prevent cheerleading injuries at:

  6. tommy2 Says:

I know I’ll get in trouble for this, but keep in mind there aren’t many girls sports that actually are contact sports. The most popular sport growing among High School girls is Lacrosse. The rules prohibit contact and a defender can’t even cut off someone that’s advancing forward. The statistics that says two-thirds of all girls injuries are from Cheerleading is a no brainer. That’s like comparing badminton to football and saying… look football has soooo many more injuries.

  7. New York Universities Says:

I agree with Eric Jaffa.Thank you for posting!
