Ypulse Essentials: Barbie’s Dark Side, ‘American Mall,’ Internet Famous

Top 10 youth activism victories (a nice round-up to remind everyone that youth are making a difference. Plus advergaming for “good” – drunk driving foes in Scotland place billboards in XBox games – thanks Derek!) (Wiretap) (BBC)
- Kids love online games (in case you missed this link in my 2008 “hot or not” post, it’s a great study — they also love doing their homework, listening to music and watching videos online…) (Marketing VOX)
- Evidently, Barbie has a dark side (it’s 14 and up dolls stirring controversy…Plus girls love Hasbro’s Littlest Pet Shop) (Miami Herald) (BusinessWeek)
- Will the writers’ strike hurt Disney’s tween franchises? (interesting LiveJournal post on the future of juggernauts like “High School Musical.” Plus MTV wants its own HSM called “American Mall”) (Hollywood Reporter)
- Airforce one turns 25 (still at the top of its game. Plus for women who LOVE shoes, it’s ShoeTube) (New York Times, reg. required)
- YouTubiquitous (first Oprah. Now the Royals!) (BBC)
- Teen mags don’t say much… (about Jamie Lynn’s “bump.” See the ongoing discussion on Ypulse here. I’m in Mommy B’s camp as far as whether she needs to be fired. It’s all about the Nick brand, Jamie Lynn, not Zoey 101, like all of Nick and Disney’s stars are brand ambassadors…unlike the HSM scandal, this one’s not going away) (New York Times, reg. required)
- Virgin Mobile (has a Facebook app) (Adverblog)
- ‘Quarterlife’ (not finding an audience online…but will it find one on TV?) (New York Times, reg. required)
- Internet Famous (a class on achieving fame via Google. Check out the blog here.) (TIME.com via Fimoculous)
- Youthography predictions (our friends up north have some 2008 predictions of their own) (Times Colonist)
P.S. Saw “Juno,” wanted to love it more than I did, but I’m not big on witty banter (never loved the Gilmore Girls). I did love the soundtrack, precious as it is.

RE “Jamie Lynn, not Zoey 101, like all of Nick and Disney’s stars are brand ambassadors…unlike the HSM scandal, this one’s not going away).”
Suppose six months from now, magazine covers show a cute baby and both parents standing alongside each other and looking on adoringly.
Then it wouldn’t be much of a scandal.

Actually… that’s the big problem with the teen magazines today. They take absolutely no editorial position and copycat a lot of things. There are ways to do it, but my guess is these people prefer to not rock the boat. This stuff can be addressed and in most cases should be. Although, with teens I tend to take the cautious side and only mention things when there are trends and patterns.
Hey… check out the news today at Tommy2.net. (most importantly the picture).
