Ypulse Essentials: Augmented Reality Makes Its Way To Sesame Street, Apple’s Educational Announcement, Hulu Plus Expects Subscribers To Double

So far augmented reality has been a novelty used by companies (like Starbucks and Macy’s to provide a little holiday entertainment for customers. But now Sesame Street plans to bring AR into education to encourage learning and imagination with a new play set unveiled this week at the Consumer Electronics Show. Is it just us or is using AR kinda like cheating on the whole “use your imagination” thing? Still, this might just be the thing to bring AR into the mainstream because kids will learn from a young age how to use it) (Kidscreen)
- We’re eagerly awaiting Apple’s education announcement next Thursday (which is currently rumored to be a textbook venture. Publishers are excited to get students toting digital textbooks to and from class on their eReaders and iPads, but so far, digital textbooks are more expensive than used textbooks, and students tend to prefer paper textbooks. But if any brand can convince students that something is cool and that they should pay a little more for it, it’s Apple…) (Mashable)
- We’ve learned a little more about MySpace’s proposed streaming TV service (which will begin by offering a channel of music videos drawing on the site’s substantial collection and eventually move into additional content like movies, news, sports, and reality shows. MySpace has already struck a deal with Panasonic to carry the channel on its line of Internet-connected Viera TVs. Speaking of streaming video, Hulu Plus subscribers topped 1.2 million in 2011 and the company is projecting that number to grow by “a multiple”) (B&C) (Fierce Online Video)
- We weren’t surprised to see Millennial stars Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift (among the winners of the People’s Choice Awards. As we mentioned yesterday, they both have particularly Millennial traits that resonate with their peers. Speaking of Demi Lovato, she’s leading the “Teens for Jeans” campaign with the help of Cody Simpson and Kristen Bell. Jeans are still a major part of the teen uniform, and this initiative from Do Something and Aeropostale makes sure that less fortunate students have plenty of denim) (MTV) (Cambio)
- Millennial women may be burning out at work by age 30 (but that may not be a bad thing. Instead of sticking with a job they don’t love, they’re exploring what they really want to do, which often means starting their own businesses. Entrepreneurship fits with the goals of Millennial women who prize independence and control over their own career paths) (Forbes)
- A campaign for a bald Barbie to honor cancer patients (who have lost their hair is gaining traction with media coverage and social media petitions. We hope Mattel will go for the idea and show a whole new side of girls and women that makes them beautiful: their strength!) (Fox)
- Facebook is becoming the grandaddy of all social networks (set to surpass the 1 billion users mark this year if it continues on pace. The growth comes from users in emerging markets like Brazil and India, while U.S. growth is stagnant) (The Next Web)
