- Mad skillz (this edition of Trendwatching is all about brands that teach or inspire people to show their their skills)

- This Bud TV's for you (if you're a 21-34-year old guy…branded entertainment by Budweiser) (New York Times, reg. required)
- She can't get enough Lonely Girl (interview with Virginia Heffernan, the New York Times TV critic who has become obsessed with YouTube of late) (On the Media via Fimoculous.com)
- Teen drivers are a wreck (sobering stats on teen driving) (Wired)
- Real Girls gets real money ($3 million for a stealth start-up designed to help girls "tell their stories") (Paid Content)
- Digital divide still exists (and will get worse with DOPA when teens who mainly access the Net from school won't be able to get to the majority of sites popular with teens - note these stats are from 2003 research…thanks Doug!) (CNET)
- Shattered dreams? (GenNext, which is fast becoming my favorite blog, offers some great insight into research that says teens are dreaming bigger than ever about their futures, but that their dreams are not in line with reality)

I consider Virigian Heffernan's description of people who post on message-boards about lonelygirl15 to be too flattering:
=================================================
What's amazing to me, and what seems
like a positive result of lonelygirl, whatever, wherever she turns out to be from, is this community of essentially – they wouldn't want to call themselves this – but they're essentially doing some kind of scholarship. There are people on lonelygirl.com who've examined the botanical properties of the flora that's visible.
===============================================
An essential aspect of scholarship is PEER REVIEW.
At the lonelygirl15.com message-board, someone claimed that the "Swimming" video must have been filmed in Southern California because of a plant shown in the video which only grows there.
Another poster wrote that he's in New Mexico and there are similar plants near him, and so how can you tell it's that exact plant?
The first poster refused to answer.

Speaking of DOPA, a Congessional candidate in Ohio named Zack Space wants to "curb minors’ usage of chat rooms and Web sites such as MySpace at schools, libraries, and at home." Zack Space is leading in a new poll.
I'm a Democrat and so is Zack Space. I'd prefer a Democratic-House-with-him-there to a Republican-House-without-him.
But if the Democrats can take back the House without Zack Space, that would be fine by me. I'd just as soon have zero Congressmen who want to regulate MySpace.
