Ypulse Book Essentials: The Beacon Street Girls, Book Clubbing In Harmony, The Odyssey Award

Posted by alli on 12-11-2007

The Beacon Street Girls find a distribution partner (The Beacon Street Girls signed on with Simon & Schuster to become a larger presence internationally. I really liked reading about the importance of independent publishers here.) (Boston.com)

- Book clubbing in harmony (Dealing with teens and tweens in the same book group: This piece seems relevant to today's post too.) (ALSC)

- The Oyssey Award (Find out about the new award being given for best audio-book — only one month to go. My only concern…birth to 18? That's a pretty wide age range.) (ALA)

- Can children's specialty bookstores survive? (Wasn't there a cute-sy romantic comedy about this very issue called You've Got Mail?) (Publishers Weekly)

- Library opens a temporary branch at a mall (This may just be a temporary civic solution, but I think they could be on to something. Really. From a teen and youth library services point of view…I say, "Hey, why not?") (EnidNews.com)

Hate to be nit-picky, but the Library in a Mall link doesn't link to the correct place.

All these are great things to know and read about! Thanks for finding it all!

For the past year, I've had the honor of being the chair of the first-ever Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production. The award is the American Library Association's newest literary award - on the same level as the Newbery, Caldecott & Printz Awards. Yes, that's right: LITERARY award. Audiobooks are taking their place beside plays, poetry, and novels as a genre of literature - one that reaches back to the earliest form, the oral tradition. The maiden voyage of the Odyssey has been guided by a crackerjack group of experts of all types of children's and young adult literature - you can recognize us by the now-permanent impression of noise-cancelling headphones 'round our ears. After nearly 400 submissions totaling 2000 hours of listening, we are near our destination: the announcement of the first winner & honor Odyssey titles at the Youth Media Awards press conference on Monday, January 14th. This effort began in 2005 with a task group of librarians, audiobook producers, and representatives from award-sponsor Booklist Magazine. To see what the official award seal looks like, visit my blog!
