YAB Interview: Gavin Rossdale

Posted by anastasia on 12-19-2008

We've decided to make Fridays our day for music coverage from our Ypulse Youth Advisory Board. We know you can find interviews with artists and music reviews elsewhere, but receiving and reviewing CDs and interviewing artists has been a great incentive for keeping our board active and engaged. As if Ypulse readers didn't already know, teens + music = happiness. Newsletter readers: Definitely check out today's YAB reviews of The Killers Day & Age and The B52′s Funplex. Today's YAB music interview is with former Bush front man – now solo artist – Gavin Rossdale with questions from Nina L. Gavin Rossdale's latest album is Wanderlust. Remember you can contact our board directly via email at youthadvisoryboard at ypulse.com.

Gavin RossdaleYpulse Youth Advisory Board: How has your sound and style changed from Bush to your solo album?

Gavin Rossdale: After Bush, I did a record as a band that was called Institute. This was a very detuned guitar style record, and intentionally heavier than Bush. When I began my solo record, the intention was to have a more cinematic record that did not rely too much on guitars. Having said that, my vocals are pretty consistent through any backing, so there will always be simliarities.

YAB: In what ways does having children influence your music?

GR: Children seem to up the stakes, generally. They make you want to be a better person — you have to be a better person — less selfish and ego-centric. Of course, that's a very good thing.

YAB: What do your older fans think of your new album, and how has your fan base changed with Wanderlust?

GR: Well hopefully I have enough fans so it makes generalizing difficult, but there seems to be a large appreciation of the record. Of course, there are some who are sad that it is not Bush, but Bush is alive and well because I play those songs and me & Bush are two sides of the same coin.

YAB: Who has most influenced your music?

GR: At this point I would say the thrill of the crowd. Of course, when you start out it is about pleasing yourself and your friends. And that of course remains, but I still get drunk on the cheering of the crowd. It's a feeling like no other. The simple desire to connect.

YAB: What were the last five songs you downloaded?

GR: I download albums!!

TV On The Radio-Dear Science
The Kings Of Leon-Only By The Night
Andre Segovia-Bach Suite No.1 In G Major Tricky-Knowle West Boy Liars-liars

About Nina L.

ninaNina is a freshman in high school in Washington state. She plays the flute in the school band. Even though she's not as writing inclined as the other board members, Nina is the youngest of the group and may share an opinion with a younger audience. Nina is very interested in fashion, new technology and teen culture. Having three and a half sisters (an exchange sister for the year) she knows a lot about how teenage girls interact with each other and their parents. Nina ‘s biggest love is music, either classical or contemporary, it doesn’t matter. She cares about all of it.

I would love to know from Gavin and other artists how they think the YA audience finds them. How important is access and what do they do to facilitate that? (like myspace pages, fan sites, interviews like this, live chats… how much gossip is manufactured vs avoided, how much internet ezine coverage like this is important to them, etc).

great job on the article, and keep it coming. thanks!

Gavin is definitely pleasing his fans – especially with his latest single, "Love Remains the Same"!! I love the song! a friend of mine passed along a great acoustic performance of that song – it's like a special personal performance to the fans <333 here's the place – tinyurl(dot)com/gavinrossdaleacoustic
I wonder if Gwen and Gavin will ever fuse their music styles to create something special…any thoughts?
