The ‘Word’ is Out

Started in 1999, Urban Word NYC, formerly Youth Speaks NY, aims to bring safe and free writing and performing opportunities to NYC youth. The site’s founders believe that teenagers “can and must speak for themselves.” The site offers a sampling of teen work in a section called Word Zone in addition to promoting censorship-free workshops and plenty of performance opportunties (Think poetry slams). Their fall 2005 calendar is packed.
