The Real ‘O.C.’ and ‘Laguna Beach’

Now that “Laguna Beach” is a hit, look for more articles like this one in the New York Times Sunday Style section (reg. required) that begins by going to Laguna Beach to ask the locals how they feel about MTV’s new hit show. From the article:

“Everyone from here agrees that that show was just embarrassing,” added Alex Richey, 22, who was seated nearby; she found the idea that the students would throw a formal “Black and White” party at a rented hotel suite laughable — unless MTV was paying.

“What they show about Laguna, it’s like all about materialism,” complained Ben Tomkinson, 18, who grew up with a few of the cast members. “Laguna’s actually a really artsy, rootsy place.”

The story then becomes the author’s first person account of growing up in Orange County and going back home to see if it’s anything like “The O.C.” today. The writer weaves back and forth between how both Orange County and now Laguna Beach are portrayed vs. the realities (i.e. whites no longer the majority in Orange County, Laguna beach is a liberal enclave with a large gay population).
