Thank You for Being a Friend
Posted by anastasia on 11-29-2005After posting about my new Myspace profile yesterday, I now have six new friends (sorry Tom, you no longer count). It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. It’s also kind of addictive getting new friend requests. More, more, more! After my seven day trial period, I plan to check out the forums and see if I can muster up some more teens willing to help with the book.
When I was in Atlanta, I met Ypulse reader James Andrews, who used to run a company called Faith Logic. James was nice enough to help me find a teen to interview for the book at his son’s school. He is also behind a new newsletter sent to “influencers” called KeyInfluencer. It has trend info for people attempting to capture the “urban” market. What is urban? Here’s how they define it:
“mindset that transcends ethnicity or geographic location****It’s what connects lil Johnny in Orange County,CA and lil Joe in the South Bronx, NYC and makes them alike not different****It’s pointillism baby! Mix it all up and it becomes its own color. It’s intelligent, creative, unorthodox, hard-to-define, soulful, inclusive, a sub-culture, color-less, powerful, lucrative, global, aspirational, and God-powered. Marketers either get this concept or they struggle trying to figure it out. Examples include: The Sopranos—-Frank Sinatra—–Masters At Work- — Nigo/Bathing Ape—–Lil Jon—-Rucker Park— Radio Nova/Paris, France—-Antibalas—Rich Medina- — Steve Jobs—Spy Music—Lil Scrappy—Ojai Valley Inn & Spa—Fort Greene Park on Summer Sunday Nights— Turntable Lab in Brooklyn—Maroon 5—Garth Trinidad Chocolate City (KCRW)—Weather Report— Ricky Lawson—George Gervin’s Ice Man Poster— KDAY— Nobu, NYC—College Park, GA—?uestlove’s Babies Makin Babies—Okayplayer.com—Jaco Pastorious— My Place Hotel, London—Serrato Scratch—Fred Segal the Santa Monica store—The original Honey Magazine—Marco’s Pita, Atlanta— UNLV Runnin Rebels 1989-91—Flints BBQ, Oakland— Madlib— Pattened Leather Top Tens—Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point—Stuart Matthewman— Canton Jones- –Malcolm McClaren’s Duck Walk—Fela Kuti— Commodore Vic-20—The Gavin Covention—Slauson Swap Meet”
Anyhow, they already have over 3K subscribers (more than Ypulse!) so check it out — email keyinfluencer@gmail.com for more info or go to their blog.
