Teen Mensches Have a Zine of Their Own

JVibe Jewish teens will now have a print magazine created just for them. According to the Jewish Journal, “the Jewish Venture Philanthropy Fund has awarded Jewish Family $125,000 to redesign JVibe’s Web site and launch a print version as a pilot program.” The plan is to publish six times a year, to link the new online version thematically to the magazine, and to include advertising and features such as a CD-ordering club to “legitimize” the publication. JVibe is also planning “a celebrity column about Jewish pop guitarist Evan Taubenfeld, who plays with Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne; what movies to watch after a break-up; and a teen philanthropy page sponsored by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.”

I will be very curious to see how JVibe does. The article mentioned a now defunct magazine Davka, “which featured Jews with tattoos, provocative articles and beat poetry, folded after a few issues — though it did give birth to the term ‘Generation J’ to describe young, alienated Jews.” They also mentioned Heeb, which I also think is too cool for school snarky. Maybe a mainstream Jewish teen magazine will catch on…
