TEAR
Posted by karell on 02-09-2006Since it’s Teen Dating Violence prevention week, I thought this article from CNN.com was pretty appropriate. It’s about a group of girls from who have formed an anti-abuse group called TEAR–Teens Experiencing Abusive Relationships.
From TEAR’s mission statement, “TEAR, which stands for Teens Experiencing Abusive Relationships is an organization fully run by teens. Our main goal is dating violence prevention through education. Since society often overlooks the fact that teens can experience abusive relationships, our mission is to educate society about the complexities and seriousness of violent dating relationships.”
I have to admit, growing up in suburbia, I never thought much about the fact that teens could find themselves in abusive relationships. I thought this kind of behavior was relegated to Lifetime movies and after school specials.
But the stats from the article are kind of scary, “The Justice Department says girls between the ages of 16 and 24 are more likely than any other age-group to become victims of relationship abuse–almost triple the national average.”
“One in five high school girls will become the victim of dating violence, according to a 2001 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.”
