Youth Intelligence has partnered with Nickelodeon to produce a whopping 140 page lifestyle study focusing on 9-14 year-olds (tweens). The study costs 10K and will be released June 18, but the agency sent out the highlights, which are pretty interesting. The two that struck me were the majority of tweens that would rather be happy than rich (nice) and how many tweens are worrying about their weight and dieting (lame).

Today’s tweens are somewhat savvier and more pragmatic than previous generations were as tweens, and they are also feeling grown-up stress — with pressures such as applying for summer camps or getting on the right soccer team, 21% of tweens say they have a lot of stress in their lives.
However, they are still generally content as 94% of tweens say they are “happy with their lives right now.”

31% of tweens listened to music online the in the past month and 13% of tweens downloaded music online in the past month.

70% of tweens hear about cool, new products from TV commercials.

88% of tweens say they would rather be “a nice person” than be “rich.”

14% of tweens say they worry about their weight and 8% of tweens have been on a diet.

Multi-tasking is already a key part of the tween lifestyle as they told us that they tend to do many things at once, including 2 hours a day watching TV, 116 minutes talking to their parents, 72 minutes listening to music, 67 minutes playing video games, 51 minutes talking on the phone, 36 minutes shopping and 33 minutes reading magazines.

Tweens feel in control of the remote control as 65% believe their opinion counts a lot when it comes to what TV shows they watch. Favorite TV shows are SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents and The Simpsons.

Tweens tend to be somewhat practical when it comes to their favorite stores because they have limited spending money, but still want fashionable items. Their favorite clothing stores include Target, Kohl’s and Old Navy which are offering younger consumers the ability to look trendy for less.

Their three favorite music artists are Britney Spears, 50 Cent and Eminem.
