'South of Nowhere' Premieres on The-N
Posted by left_blank on 11-08-2005It is with eager anticipation that I checked out the new series "South of Nowhere" on the-N this week. Its promos called to mind "The O.C." and "Laguna Beach," as it hyped its glam L.A. heritage. The hour-long premiere was an interesting blend of elements of "90210″ and "7th Heaven," with a dash of "Degrassi" as it introduced the main characters of the show.
Like "90210," the series focuses on siblings who move to L.A. from the midwest. In this case cheerleader Spencer, basketball hero Glen, and brainiac Clay are shown trying to find their place in their new high school in California. They all seem to have a running start, though, as they are gorgeous and talented in all the ways that make it easier to be "popular" in high school.
The family is wholesome and are shown praying each night before dinner (shades of "7th Heaven"!). Yet some edgier topics are introduced immediately as Spencer becomes friends with a girl who is rumored to be a lesbian and her sexuality is then questioned by her peers. This causes her to get judged and kicked off the cheerleading squad (lame!).
In that busy first hour both Glen and Clay get into fights involving girls and Clay is shaken by an incident with the LAPD where he is harassed for being African American. It's a lot of conflict to get thrown at you in one episode, so it will be intriguing to see how everything plays out as the series progresses. I'm dying to know if Spencer and Glen are twins ala Brendan and Brandon and if they will pursue a lesbian plot-line with Spencer and her new pal Ashley. Stay tuned!
