Most of our favorite YouTube videos are short, lighthearted clips that provide a quick dose of entertainment (but one YouTube user had a different idea. He created the longest YouTube video ever, which takes 23 days and 19 hours to watch! We know millennials are media savvy, but that’s insanely long. Also, the YouTube movie “Life in a Day” hits theaters today, and it’s a cool compilation of footage from 80,000 people about what life is like on a single day on Earth. But don’t worry, unlike it’s name suggests, it doesn’t take a full day to watch!) (Social Times) (Ad Age, reg required)
- No need for parents to worry about their children’s behavior on Twitter (now that the social network will warn users of links that may be inappropriate. The technology flags “possibly sensitive” content, so youth can be safe while they tweet. In other Twitter news, ads will appear in users’ timelines as “Promoted Tweets,” but only for brands they follow. If users don’t want to see ads, they can just unfollow a brand. It’s a risk for companies since this may result in fewer followers) (Mashable) (Huffington Post)
- It’s back-to-school shopping time (and MediaPost has a report on what to expect this season. On average, families plan to spend $800 on clothes, school supplies, and grooming. They’re more likely to buy big-brand products and shop at department stores or online than at discount stores. Meanwhile they’re cutting back on other expenses like entertainment and dining out)
- Charice Pempengco, the talented Filipino singer and ‘Glee’ star (just released an inspiring music video for the song “One Day,” which doubles as a commercial for Acuvue contact lenses. The video is about living your dreams, accepting your peers, and overcoming social cliques. It also features the contest winners who submitted YouTube videos of what they hope to do “1 Day”) (PopDust)
- If you can’t get enough of Selena Gomez (watch the commercial for her Kmart clothing line, Dream Out Loud, featuring her modeling the collection to her hit song “Love You Like a Love Song.” Singing, styling, modeling — what can’t this girl do? In other fashion news, Emma Watson is rumored to be launching an evening wear line. We’re not surprised since she’s so stylish! And Lauren Conrad’s line, Paper Crown, finally hits stores tomorrow!) (JSYK) (MTV) (WWD)
- PBS’s show ‘Dinosaur Train’ and Amtrak have teamed up (for a special promotion just in time for the big episode “Dinosaur Big City.” The T-rex Buddy is pictured on train ticket jackets, placemats, seatbacks, and counter cards, and Random House is producing free on-board activity booklets for kids) (Kidscreen)
- The Teen Choice Awards are approaching and (we’re excited for a new category this year: “Choice Vampire.” It seems appropriate since there are so many TV and movie vampires to choose from, but we bet Rob Pattinson will take home the surfboard! Speaking of “Twilight Saga,” one of the movie’s stars will appear on the “Breaking Dawn” soundtrack. We just got even more excited for this film!) (Entertainment Weekly) (PopDash)
- And now for a little Friday fun (watch this spoof commercial for Lady Gaga’s fake babywear line called Gaga Goo Goo. What parent wouldn’t want their child to wear a dress made out of meat?) (Jimmy Kimmel Live)
