‘The Hunger Games’ premiered last night in LA (and the early reviews are in with critics tweeting things like “excellent” and “the film is great.” Fans lined up outside the Nokia Theatre to get a glimpse of the stars, and Jennifer Lawrence appropriately stole the show looking very much like a girl on fire in her gold lame dress. The movie underwent some slight tweaks to get a teen-friendly rating in the UK; amid critics, there are still some concerns about whether parents will want their children seeing a movie with so much kid-on-kid violence. ABC Family has landed the TV rights to the film, which it can air 30 months after the film’s debut) (HuffPo) (Us) (Deadline Hollywood) (B&C)
– In a new twist on fashion reality shows, NBC’s ‘Fashion Star’, debuting tonight (brings three retailers — Macy’s, Saks, and H&M — to the table to bid on items created by the show’s up-and-coming designers, which are then produced and sold in stores. The retailers ultimately sponsor a collection from the winning designer. We’re curious to see what designs have the three radically different retailers bidding with equal gusto. In other TV news, SXSW attendees were treated to a sneak peek of HBO’s “Girls” which offers an uncensored portrayal of the lives of Millennial women — in all their glory and misery) (WSJ, reg required) (Fempop)
– Hotels are attempting to entice Millennials (with hip makeovers, including lounges and bars that spill into elegant lobbies, open wifi networks, and tech stations that allow visitors to plug in their tablets and phones. Unlike brand-loyal older generations who seek reliability and comfort, Millennials want to find innovative and unique offerings) (NY Times, reg required)
– We’re ever bigger fans of Chris Colfer after reading this commentary (on how he’s elevated the role of LGBT teen characters with his role of Kurt on “Glee.” Comparing his portrayal of Kurt to other classic gay characters — Ricky from “My So-Called Life” and Willow from “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” — he’s brought LBGT roles to the same level as straight characters) (Crushable)
– Millennial women are go-getters at work (though many don’t feel like they’re being appropriately compensated. But could it be their own fault? They’re less likely than Millennial men to proactively manage their career and to ask for raises) (PR Daily)
– Will Millennials be the generation that finally shifts the auto industry from gas guzzlers to hybrids? (A new survey from Deloitte suggests it’s possible, with most young drivers saying they prefer an electric car to any other type of vehicle. But so far their preferences aren’t playing out in what they actually drive) (Car Scoop, via PSFK)
– Here’s the short list of children’s books nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Awards (just announced by the International Board on Books for Young People. Speaking of books, we had to share these clever printable book covers designed to remind others that you’re reading and don’t want to be disturbed. Along with some generic “go away” versions, there is a series of YA book covers, including our favorite: “I’m in the arena, BRB” for our copy of “the Hunger Games”) (IBBY) (GalleyCat)
