Ypulse Essentials: Oscars Miss With Millennials, 'Born This Way' Pays Homage To Madonna, Sony Will Crowdsource Michael Jackson Video

Oscars 2011Last night’s Oscars fell flat (on so many counts. The various efforts to grab young viewers failed. James Franco came across as “beige” and stoned while Anne Hathaway overcompensated to fill the void. The second screen, behind-the-scenes view via webcam yielded mixed results. The Academy made some successful nods to youth culture featuring Staten Island’s PS22 choir to close out the ceremony and, in one of the night’s best moments, auto-tuned the movies. But ratings were down and the show was more deserving of a Razzie…which were also handed out over the weekend, with “The Last Airbender” taking top “honors”) (New York Times) (Salon, day pass required) (Gawker) (LA Times) (BuzzFeed) (Deadline Hollywood) (Slate)

- Lady Gaga’s video for ‘Born This Way’ (premiered today with so much obvious symbolism it was hard to keep track of it all. Always trying to top herself, Gaga gives birth to a big gooey mess of good and evil, dances around in her underwear, and — in homage to Madonna — dons a power suit and sports a gap between her front teeth) (Flavorpill) (Salon, day pass required)

- A new report finds (that optimism isn’t tied to generations, but to age. As Millennials age, their optimism wanes) (Mediapost)

- In a brilliant move (Sony Music invites fans to contribute moves, lyrics, and video to “Behind The Mask,” a single released on the late-King of Pop’s “Michael” album) (Mashable)

- ‘Skins’ gives a realistic depiction (of kids and media consumption) (Ad Age, reg required)

- Crayola ColorStudio for iPad (is a pretty awesome digital coloring book, though we hope kids won’t grow up not knowing the smell of a real crayon. In other tech news, devices designed only for gaming are losing out to phones that can do games and much more) (Laughing Squid) (Ars Technica)

- Trends from Toy Fair (include sustainability, connections to social media, collectibles, and updated classics) (Good Housekeeping)
