Ypulse Essentials: Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards, Phelps' Fall Out With Kellogs, Virtual MTV Revamps

Kids Choice AwardsNickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards (are announced and the nominees are… Miley, the Jonas Brothers and “Twilight.” In these uncertain times, it’s nice to know there are still some things you can count on. Plus props to ABC Family for their primetime show “Secret Life of the American Teenager,” This Ad Age columnist goes so far as to call it the channel’s answer to “Mad Men”) (E! Online) (Ad Age, reg. required)

- Candy Land: The Movie (not sure how I feel about this, but definitley looking forward to the set design) (Variety)

- Phelps dropped by Kellogs (for the now infamous “bong photo.” Plus Current TV comes out in defense of the young swimming star’s error in judgment reminding folks that heroes are college students too.) (Ad Age, reg. required)

- Teen chains stay afloat (while all other retails takes a major hit) (Ad Age, reg. required)

- Meet the Carter Twins (already being heralded as Country music’s answer to the Jonas Brothers. And speaking of.. the reigning pop siblings will be screening their concert in 3-D in IMAX theaters) (CMT) (Trend Central)

- CollegeHumor (more coverage and eager anticipation for their upcoming television debut on MTV. And co-founder Rick Van Veen talk about the site, the show and what comes next) (New York Times, reg. required) (Ad Age, reg. required)

- Barbie vs. Hello Kitty (both girly brands are making appearances at New York’s upcoming Fashion Week. I can just hear the “catfight” jokes now. Plus with her 50th anniversary Barbie seeks to pull the heartstrings of three generations) (Jezebel) (PR Week)

- Yes, teens are shortsighted (but not for the reasons parents may think. A new study shows it’s less because they don’t care about their future, and more that they’re excited about what’s happening in the present) (Science Daily)

- Virtual MTV (the channel’s digital team has revamped its branded virtual world where users can design avatars and decorate their own cribs. Also MTV’s “America’s Next Dance Crew” teams up with digital engagement agency Fanscape to build a bigger online fanbase. And after a brief hiatus TV Guide relists MTV and CW) (Virtual World News) (MediaPost, reg. required) (Variety)

I’m really surprised “I Kissed a Girl” was nominated.

You shouldn’t be that surprised by the nominees. Traditionally the list comes from those who promise they will attend the show. That’s why certain people continue to win every year. As usual Will Smith always takes the opportunity to get his kids on the orange carpet to meet their favorite celebs. Should we be surprised to see the failure… Hancock on the list?

Hmm… will be interesting to see how things unfold with Michael Phelps being on the list from a media coverage perspective.

I find Danica Patrick another interesting choice who’s cashed out with GoDaddy!

Like I said, historically these nominees have been people who commit to showing up.

Oh and of course another ‘choice’ seems to have gone sour… Favorite Singer Chris Brown who’s snagged the headlines. The whole male singer category is now questionable… although you can always plead the legacy case for J-Mac.

Got something to say?
