I mentioned as a footnote in yesterday’s Essentials that I had received a tip saying Sconex.com, the high school social networking site founded by Josh Schanker has been down. It appears it is down for good. A source inside Alloy told me, “yes Sconex has closed - we’re shifting our efforts with focus on our Teen.com platform - audience has grown to over 22 million since we launched and will be sharing developments/social media opportunities there soon.” Alloy acquired Sconex in March of 2006 for $6.1 million. When I was interviewing teens in NYC for Totally Wired, and asked which social networking site they were on, several told me Sconex, which is how the site first appeared on my personal radar.

Well frankly I am hurt that Sconex is gone…not that I cared for the site itself, its just the place where I had letter from my friend that passed away. Pictures, letters, his phone number [I’m sure it no longer exists] but it was all saved there. Now it is all gone.
Sconex was my last hope in finding a long lost friend. I don’t think I’ll ever find her again…
i am so upset. i had a journal on sconex, and i had been keeping it for a year. i have depression problems, and i would write where no one would see on the journal on sconex, and all my thoughts, all my revelations, and all my poems and other things i had saved on that journal are gone. and it hurts cause that was all my hard work. feels like a year of my life disappeared. i wish someone had told me it was going to be deleted. =[
Hi Danielle and “Small Lady.” I have contacted Alloy, the company that bought Sconex to see if there is any way they can recover files for set up a customer support email for Sconex users. Danielle, I’m really sorry that happened to you.
omg i really really want all my pictures back..i had all my old pictures there believing i will allways have them…ughhhh why it needed to shut down for?

im so mad!! i havent been on sconex 4 a while and now i find out its gone….i had lots of stuff there that i have saved and now they are all gone!!! they shouldve sent a massive email saying that it was going to shut down that way people had a chance to save any posts or pictures!! that was an unfair thing to do

I totally agree with “vane” all my pics & private messages have gone, I thought something was wrong with my internet so I didn’t try to go on for a while, when I finally came to try again it kept taking me to another site, then I thought to myself. This is stupid, why ain’t this working?! I then found this site & from everyone else’s comments I now know what’s going on.
I seriously feel hurt. Some people just don’t care! how you gonna just delete the site without no warning, it don’t make sense. I want my pics, messages & everything back!!

Its kind of crazy for it to just be deleted that was the only place where u can find ppl from the past ... I hope they send everyones an email with all there stuff back .... they should bring ti back .. why woud they delete if it was so popular ... and safer than other websites .... hope I get a chance to get my stuff back at least .. r.I.p sconex ..
That’s crazy that they just shut down the website without any warnings… Anyway I have a good news, there is a new awesome website for highschool students called http://highschooltabloid.com It’s .more a tabloid like Perez or Tmz than a myspace-like and it seems to be a really kool and new concept.They have a tabloid for every US School and the students report about their school life.I already sign up under my school, John Marshall in L.A, so see you there guys ;) I looooooooove Tabloids ;p
As a mother of two teenagers I am disturbed that these kids have lost a part of themselves & no one showed them the respect to inform them that the end was coming for their online storage. How can we teach our children to be compassionate & respectful when they are treated with such disrespect & lack of compassion by a company. It’s hard enough to raise kids these days without companies adding to their confusion & mistrust. FIGURE OUT A WAY TO GIVE THEM BACK THEIR STUFF…it isn’t rocket science, just do it.
Does someone have any information on how we can recover our old photos, messages and life on Sconex! I also had many memories on that site and sympathize with all those, who like me, have lost a piece of themselves with the deletion of sconex. I will now make sure to save all of my files from other sites since it is now ever more obvious that nothing is safe on the internet.
dang i cant believe this i met the love of my life on sconex sounds weid but we in it a year now and everything is great…well nothing we can do now jus hope theres a way to get all our stuff back alot of memories on that site….smh
I too met someone extremely special on sconex and had pictures and personal blogs saved on the site.Poems and things i wish i remembered now.their was a lot of perverted profiles but i still liked the site and miss it very much…
Me and that girl are broken up now and even though it was just the site we met on,it feels like something is missing.
wow thats sad i was wondering why the other day i tried to log on and i kept getting teen something. then today when i tried again, i notice the RIP sconex. It was my last hope of getting some of my friends’ #s. wow i loss all my infos and pixs. i do have to admit that i had stop using sconex since i was in my freshment year. I remember sconex..I think I was like 14 when I joined the site…and then like others abandoned it to join the myspace phonemona….I used to talk to different boys from different h.s and all that good stuff but after a while like sophmore year it just became to young for me.I remember beefin with ppl lolz just havin fun.Hs was great I miss it….

wow.. that’s crazy… i haven’t logged on sconex in the longest. i tried to sign on today after so long to see if i could save some of my old high school pictures from there on to my laptop… the sad thing is that i lost the memory card that i used to have with all those pictures… that was my only and last resort to try and restore them =[[

Well i find it pretty sad i had so much on there including some old friends and new ones how im going to get them back is going to be something but wow i actually cried when i tried to go in a it was gone like no where to be found T.T R.I.P Sconex.
I’m sad that it’s gone because I had a ton of pics on there that I can not get back, but something absolutely amazing came out of it. Many years later this guy and I ended up together and in love. I just wish that I could get those pics back.

i personally didnt lose anything on this site, but its kinda sad to know it’s gone…just the old familiar orange sign brings back alot of memories.

I think it’s truly ridiculous that you all did this with no warning…if starbucks could notify us about a new coffee promotion you could;ve notified us about sconex. I have pics of two important people that I’ve lost in my life and now that’s all gone. You guys should look up professionalism and gain some…I can’t believe this…how would you like it if you were getting married and the bridal/groom shop closed done without notice? would you take that lightly?

i am glad this website dont exist. my daughter was a victim of identity theft and all her information was posted to grown men. she was only 14 at the time . it was so easy to hack others personal photos and data. i fought so hard to shut this thing down and i am glad it finally came to an end my daughter was humilated…. peace sconex.
