Parents Spying on Teen Blogs
Posted by left_blank on 11-28-2005A number of articles recently have addressed the fears that adults have about teen blogging, ranging from privacy concerns to bullying to scandalous behavior. A piece in the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal (link will work for non-subscribers for the next 7 days, then subscription required) discusses the lengths that some parents go to in order to monitor their teens online. In some cases parents have freaked out when discovering something about their teen in a blog, yet in others they have used blogs as a method of communication and as a way of gaining more understanding about their teen. I thought one parent made a good point that reading blogs isn't the same type of privacy violation as reading your child's diary since it is in the public domain. The article also includes a number of tips and resources for parents who want to search for evidence of their teens' blogging activity. It also wisely points out how savvy teens are in covering their tracks when they realize their parents are snooping.
