Observations Of a Comic-Con Outsider

This past weekend Ypulse sent me to New York's Comic Con to get a feel for what's big in the world of superheroes, supervillains and every semi to non-super animated being in between. So, how'd it go? Honestly, it was a pretty overwhelming scene. I think my biggest personal takeaway was crowds + costumes + comics = mini anxiety attack. But fears of being trampled alive at the Javits Center aside, I did get to see some interesting things. Of course, these untrained eyes probably missed a lot, so Ypulse readers, if you came out this weekend, feel free to share what you saw in comments!
What Recession? – Despite the tough times, it seemed like there were plenty of fans more than willing to shell out the $40 bucks for tickets. Both Friday and Saturday were sold out, and when I went on Sunday, it was still packed. Of course that doesn't even take into account the comics/apparel/memorabilia being snatched up inside.
"Watchmen" vs. "Wolverine: Origins" – Even a neophyte like myself knows about the longstanding rivalry between DC and Marvel, and it was clear that the biggest promotional pushes for both were going towards their upcoming feature films. Both were getting decent attention, but "Wolverine" had a sneak preview of the video game set to come out with the release that had a line snaking well past the ropes.
Old School Gets a New Twist – While the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie was a pretty big flop, there still seems to be hope that the sewer-dwelling heroes will resurface. Of course, I didn't see too much action around the booth so who knows. Similarly, I saw a release date for a new line of Archie comics coming out in Fall 09, but this seemed to be getting more love from parents than kids.
Obama: The New Captain America – In addition the much publicized issue of Spiderman featuring the new prez, there were quite a few smaller comics touting the face and name of the country's "fearless leader."
