Newspapers: YT? Time to Worry
Posted by anastasia on 11-24-2004When I was at the Online News Association conference participating in our group bonding exercise about what newspapers should do to reach young people, it was clear that they didn't really know and that a lot of people seemed burnt out on even thinking about it. I mean this has been "a problem" for awhile, written about extensively, and heck, one newspaper company even bought a student project from the Medill School of Journalism as an attempt at trying to reach this audience. Wired's Media Hack Adam Penenberg writes that it's time for newspapers to worry, not just acknowledge that there is a problem. He cites the Washington Post focus groups, which I pointed to in an Editor and Publisher column awhile back that basically say young people are accustomed to news being free and online. Penenberg doesn't offer any suggestions for newspapers but just echoes young people's prediction that they will die off as the generation that still reads them passes.
