My Next Publishing Project
Posted by anastasia on 03-06-2008
For Ypulse readers who followed the process of writing and publishing Totally Wired, I wanted to share my next project with you. No, it’s not the teen religion book or my own YA novel (though both are on my list for the future). It’s actually kind of a no-brainer that dawned on me after speaking to parents one night about Totally Wired. One of the dads said, can you talk to our teens? They won’t listen to us — but they’ll listen to you. It’s a request I got over and over from the schools I spoke at, but my talk was really geared towards parents and educators.
You’ve probably figured out what I’m planning to do at this point in the post, but just in case, yes, I’m going to write a guide for teens (13-17) on managing their digital lives. I’m collaborating with my friend Pilar Erika Johnson who is an amazing illustrator (and who designed the original Ypulse logo and site!). I want to do something in the spirit of my favorite teen guide of all time — Deal With It — though it won’t be quite as lengthy since the focus is narrower. If you have other great illustrated guides you think we should check out, let us know. We’re working on our proposal now.
When and if the guide gets published, I plan to develop a workshop that I will market to schools just for teens. I’m excited because this will enable me to be talking to more teens on a regular basis. Pilar and I will also design a fun companion book site that teens can interact on as well. To answer the question many of you might be thinking, I know teens won’t buy the book (or at least not en masse) — my hope is that parents and educators will buy it for them.

That looks like it’ll be a great resource. As a 23-year-old male, I can’t even imagine how difficult it must be for girls that age!

Great idea, Anastasia! Please make sure you keep those of us in the media in the loop so we can write about the book. (And keep in mind, lead times can be l-o-n-g depending on the publication) Good luck!

This sounds like a perfect fit for you, Anastasia. Great idea. I’m assuming it’s for teen girls and guys, right? They’ll love the illustrated/comic bookish/magazinish approach with tips and sidebars, etc. Hope my boys aren’t too old by the time it comes out!
